The best Maldivian holiday begins with the right island—not simply the most expensive villa.
Some travellers want a lively resort with restaurants and water sports. Others want a quiet house reef, a shaded beach, or the human rhythm of an inhabited island. Distance from Malé affects transfer time and cost; the shape of an island affects its beaches; and the reef can matter more than the room if you came to snorkel.
This guide is written from a Maldivian perspective. It is independent, personal, and intended to help you ask better questions before you book.
Local islands
Guesthouses offer a closer view of everyday island life. Respect local customs, use designated tourist beaches, and choose excursions run responsibly.
Liveaboards
Best for travellers whose priority is diving. Routes change with seasons and currents, so experience level and safety standards matter more than luxury.

A beautiful villa cannot compensate for the wrong island. Before paying, look beyond the bedroom photographs and study the practical details.
- Transfer: Speedboat, seaplane, or domestic flight—and whether arrival time may require a night in Malé.
- Beach: Sand naturally shifts. Ask about the beach near your exact room category, not only the island in general.
- Reef: “House reef” can mean very different swimming distances and coral conditions.
- Meals: Check drinks, speciality restaurants, taxes, and excursion exclusions before comparing packages.

Coral is living habitat, not decoration. Keep your fins away from the reef, never stand on coral, and do not chase or touch turtles, rays, sharks, or dolphins. Choose operators who brief guests properly and keep a responsible distance from wildlife.
For snorkelling, ask where the reef edge begins, whether currents are common, if a guide is available, and which entry points are safest at different tides.
